Day 5
Recap. The Good, the bad, the ugly and the Blessed
The Good: We were invited to dinner and bingo. A small (very) town called Como. Only in America. 🇺🇸
More Good: riding the bike trail around Silverthorne Lake. Postcard views.
The Bad: We say goodbye to one of our riding buddies. Now we are five.
The Ugly: Boreas Pass 11,482 elevation. Today was one of the highest passes we cross. On a good note, it’s an old railway route which kept the grade steady. You know. Happy talk for the first half climbing out of the haughty town of Breckenridge.
Less talking the middle. Very little talk for the last two miles.
Just as we reached the summit , an old timer offered to take our picture within seconds, the rain and thunder were upon us. I couldn’t get my jacket on fast enough in the wind! Luckily there was some ancient railway buildings and we hid under the two foot overhang until the storm blew through. We headed for a campsite 6 miles away in our full rain gear. It was getting late but We took a chance and set out for a town that we saw on the map called Como.
The Blessed: We nearly coasted 10 miles to the town. Arriving at 5:45, Como, at 10,000 ft elevation is a train stop town only there’s no more trains. Maybe there’s 50 houses? The book said there’s a restaurant. We stopped at one of the only people we saw and asked where the restaurant was. She said it wasn’t. We asked if we could camp somewhere. She said matter of fact, there’s a community center just up the street you can camp there and tonight at six o’clock was Bingo and a $5 dinner. I think our mouths all fell open. You don’t have to tell Ron twice, he took off up the street and found the old school house. It was an only in America experience. A true blessing. The place was almost full. They all welcomed us in and someone was already pointing to a table we could sit at. They had lasagna, salad, and many folks had brought dessert. We were in heaven. When the bingo started, we could barely keep our eyes open but played a few games. Happily the weather looks good tonight so a good sleep to be had.
